For the first recipe on my new blog (yay!) I had to share one of my favorites – a creamy peanut butter cacao smoothie. It’s super easy, all you need is 5 ingredients, 5 minutes, and a blender.
The base consists of a frozen banana, peanut butter, and the star of the show; raw cacao powder. If you haven’t already, check out my post on cacao’s benefits and why it’s a superfood you NEED to add to your smoothies.
But for now just think of it as a raw, less processed, guilt free chocolate. That’s right. With this smoothie you finally have a healthy way to satisfy those dessert cravings.
For the liquid portion of the smoothie I use almond milk, but any plant based milk will do. Coconut milk would be really delicious but you’ll have to watch out for the extra fat.
The final “secret” ingredient is the honey. This adds a hint of sweetness to even out the slightly bitter cacao.
If you’ve never had cacao, the flavor is very similar to dark chocolate only less sweet. One of the main differences between cacao vs. cocoa is that cacao is less processed. This means raw cacao has no fattening additives like sugar.
While this smoothie is great for satisfying dessert cravings, I actually prefer it as a breakfast smoothie. The peanut butter and banana will keep you full and satisfied while the cacao energizes you and provides a nice mood boost.
It’s the perfect way to start your day!
You can find raw cacao powder at most health food stores. I prefer to get my dry and non-perishable ingredients from Thrive Market and have them delivered straight to my door.
Thrive market has saved me about 30% off my grocery bills since I started using them!
